sf/bay old school book starting

hey, some of you may know me, julie generic. i have done a zine called weird weather in the past and while going through these tribes i realized i really want to put together a book of the Old Days. i live up in ukiah and jayed (feederz) also does, we are going to collaborate on this project.

here are a few of the things it will cover:

this book will be both a requiem and a revival of ALL old school punk stories and art, focus on SF bay area. the idea is to get writing, interviews, art etc., from people, alive and dead, who made this city a mecca of demented artistry during the years that punk thrived. i expect there will be certain cross-overs too, as 'genre' lines were not so finely drawn back then.

we will not be covering rivet, industrial, or any of those current manifestations of popular underground music because...well, it covers itself and i am not a huge fan (i do listen but not with the same passion and sense of connection).

what you can do to contribute:

* ideas for the title.
* art: got old flyers, pictures, photos? collage? anything that relates to the topic.
* RIP page(s): photos, music, art of people who are gone; or just a memorandum for someone you miss.
* writing: stories from your personal experiences on the street, in the clubs, with the bands, being there and what was going on with you in general.
* who's doing what now: bands, people, pets; interviews?
* ideas for issue themes: the farm, the mabuhay, the on broadway, powell punks, skate scene (jaks of course!), the early deathrock scene.
* contact page: who you are and how to get in touch so you can perhaps connect with old friends who are NOT dead yet.
* any other ideas you might have: brainstorm with me!

the topics will be broken down into chapters like, and RIP chapter, a 'where are they now' chapter, etc. and this needs to be NON FICTION. in our case, truth is stranger than fiction.

i always knew i'd put together a book, and this is it. we will be approaching vic vale first for publishing.

A little more sparkle is coming to After Dark! 06.16.07

First off, thanks to all of you for supporting Margo and my new club After Dark these last 4 months.
After the end of Dark Sparkle we wanted a new beginning. We were ready to exorcise some old ghosts and bring in new elements for our new club. Well, mission accomplished. While we realized our goal of bringing in more of the new to differentiate ourselves from our former project, you can never really escape your past. Point is, we don't want to! DJing mainly classic tracks weekly in the upstairs at Death Guild has re-invigorated our love of old school goth, death rock, post-punk, new wave, etc. The bedrock of what Dark Sparkle was always based on. While we'll always continue to include new and exciting music at After Dark, we're in agreement that there's no need to hide from the classics that we grew up with and hold close to our hearts as well. We've proved our point, we've moved on to a new venture from Dark Sparkle's inimitable shadow, but it's time to bring some of the sparkle back to After Dark! We're looking forward to seeing you again in June at our new home in Julie's Supper Club. It's a great space and we're very happy to be there. We can't wait to see you on Saturday June 16th!

Thank you for coming out to the first After Dark!

Even though there was almost a comical amount of things going wrong last night, we really appreciate the turnout and positive and constructive feedback we've received so far.
With any new place you really can't tell what works and what doesn't until you've done a test run, but no one could have predicted that I'd basically wipe out my entire track collection from my laptop right as the club started! This as you can probably guess turned into my big focus for the rest of the night.
Thanks very much to our friend Josh (DJ FACT.50) for helping out Margo and myself as we tried to make sure you were having a good time, distributing CD's and addressing the other issues that arose during the night.

So here are the critiques we've heard so far...
1. Drinks were kind of pricey - We've spoken to the bar about this and agreed that the drink specials were not adequately advertised. This will be resolved next time. The drink prices are honestly on par with just about every other club in the city and definitely cheaper than a lot of venues. The advertisement and posting of the drink specials will help.
2. The dance floor was kind of bright - We can do without the intellibeams next time and see how that goes. It was a little disco inferno in there when compared to the two static cans we used to have at Dark Sparkle.
3. You couldn't hear the music very well in the lounge area - We plan on having a monitor or two in the lounge next time so that the music is clearly audible, but not intrusive. We want you to be able to talk and hear yourselves think, but still enjoy the music even if you're not dancing.

Here are some of the positives...
1. People liked the space, both location and the interior - We agree that the space has a lot of potential and the staff at Julie's is interested in only making it better. Next time we should have even more positive changes to help set the mood and make the space that more cozy and intimite.
2. Having parking available was a big help - Julie's does have parking available in the Jiffy Lube lot next door and we will continue to be able to offer free parking with available parking passes (just ask our doorperson for one or you could get towed).

I hope you managed to get one of the CD's. With everything else we were dealing with I'm afraid we weren't very good at distribution.
If you see Miz Margo out at a club in the next week see if she can offer you one of the remaining stock. It's a much better indicator of our sound and what we want to do sonically than the actual club turned out to be last night (due to our technical difficulties).
We're really excited to get the few issues we ran into last night ironed out and plan to make the next one that much better!

The next After Dark is Saturday March 17th (yes, Saint Patrick's Day) be there!
We can't wait.

Dark Sparkle dips into the glitter one last time...Sunday January 28th.

Happy new year everyone!
Some major news on the Dark Sparkle front that we wanted to share with you.
You may have heard all ready (we mentioned it briefly on our Christmas mailing) that Dark Sparkle is closing in January.
We have just confirmed an official date, time, etc. for the LAST Dark Sparkle. Our closing party will be on Sunday January 28th at the Cafe Du Nord.
Dark Sparkle radio will be shutting down at the end of January as well.
As this will be the last event (and on a Sunday) we've arranged for extended hours (9pm-2am).
Be sure to spread the word! We don't want anyone to say that they didn't know we were shutting down and miss out on our final event.
It's been a good 8 year run and we have no regrets. Thank you so much for supporting us all these years. We couldn't have done it without you.

Now on to the good part...

We aren't shutting down Dark Sparkle to move to that retirement home in Florida just yet...

Beginning in February Miz Margo and Sage are starting a new monthly club at the recently resurrected Julie's Supper Club!
Dark Sparkle is dead...long live After Dark!
Every 3rd Saturday beginning February 17th, we'll be bringing you everything you loved about Dark Sparkle and then some.
Julie's has a completely seperate room for performances and dancing as well as food, drink specials and lots of private lounging space in the main area.
We'll also now be able to introduce reduced pricing, extended hours and possibly 18+ again. More details to follow in the very near future.
We're very excited about starting something new in a new space that's open to nothing but possibilities.
It's still us, still the music that we all love, but now on SATURDAYS!
We can't wait!

For our dedicated Dark Sparkle radio listeners, we haven't forgotten about you.
It's currently up in the air as to whether we'll introduce a new station for the new club.
We welcome your opinions, but we're currently planning on either a monthly or bi-weekly podcast with a CD's worth of music to be alternated by Miz Margo and Sage.

Placebo ticket for Warfield show 10/24

I bought two tickets (upstairs seating since I'm old) for the Placebo show next Tuesday at the Warfield and right after I bought them my roommate remembered he has a board meeting that night and can't go (plus we just saw them in Paris and that's his one show a year quota), so if anyone wants the other ticket send me a message. It's free but you'll have to sit next to me which is often times a price worse than Ticketmaster convenience fees...

The Floating Corpses are playing the Clarion Alley Art and Street Festival, this Sunday Oct. 22. (in the Mission, between Mission and Valencia Sts. and 17th and 18th Sts..for those from out of town.) Bands are playing all day, we go on at 7:30pm, not sure which stage, so get there earlier, for other bands worthy of experiencing, plus murals and party!! All Ages, all welcome, Free.....that' s the corpses at seven thirty, and the party/bands continues after us as well, ok, I'm repeating, exited rambling...

with THE HUSBANDS and two other bands.

The Rumours Of Dark Sparkle's Death Have Been Greatly Exaggerated

Lately Margo and I have been hearing quite a bit of surprise from people when we hand out flyers or speak of our upcoming events.
For some reason many of you believed that we closed already.
Well, DARK SPARLE IS NOT DEAD!
Maybe it's all the black...hmm?
For the record:
Dark Sparkle is MONTHLY at the CAFE DU NORD.
Dark Sparkle radio is ON THE AIR.
Dark Sparkle has dates scheduled through JANUARY 2007!
We never closed!
We've been open a whopping 7+ years!
Please, SPREAD THE WORD. We need all of the support that we can get!
In related news, while we may be booked for the rest of the year, we've already been advised by the Cafe Du Nord that they want to see a definite increase in numbers for us to continue booking there in the future.
No, we're not doing badly. Realize however that the Cafe Du Nord is a LIVE venue. We're pretty much it when it comes to night clubs, so they're used to live show numbers and revenue. We don't charge 10+ bucks a head and maybe we don't have the immediacy of say a live show in people's minds.
If a band you like is in town you HAVE to go for fear of missing them.
Well folks, let's get some immediacy in your minds because if we don't have your support, WE won't be around much longer either.
It's the nature of the club beast...and we want to be around for a long time to come.
We love you and thank you for your support all of these years. Here's to the future!

Now that the combination of "The Lebanon" and "Israel" has been played back-to-back recently at Club Gossip, New Wave City, and apparently Shadowplay, I fully expect you to complete the suite and play them at the next Dark Sparkle. I believe in bowling terms it's referred to as "a turkey". You have to one-up them, though, so might I suggest playing the extended 12" versions of both (I have them if you want to borrow them), or perhaps interjecting another relevant track in between them. Melting Girl already did "Get the Balance Right", so you'll have to think of something more clever. "I'm Nin Alu" ("At the Gates of Heaven") afterwards perhaps? As you were....

If Dark Sparkle were to go back to being twice a month again at the Cafe Du Nord, would you go...or do you prefer us being monthly?
The option is on the table, but the venue has concerns if this is the right time for us to go back to such a schedule.
We'd like to, but only if the people that come out for our events actually have an interest in that kind of frequency.
So seriously, what do you think? Pro's, cons, opinions, rants...let us have it!

The end of an era...a return to form. Big Dark Sparkle news!

You're hearing it first...
Beginning March 1st Dark Sparkle returns to the Cafe Du Nord to begin an exclusive residency. You've asked for it, we've wanted it and now it's a reality.
DARK SPARKLE IS BACK AT THE CAFE DU NORD!
But as with all things in life, you have to take the good with the bad.
After several years of being an integral part of the Dark Sparkle family, our own Michael Sparkle is spreading his wings and leaving the nest.
We're sure he'll be posting on his own to tell you all about it, but in a nutshell Michael is pursuing his dream of global entertainment domination in Los Angeles.
We'll miss him, but don't cry yet...
Michael will still be travelling back and forth between LA and the Bay Area and will continue to have a hand in Dark Sparkle business.
There's lots more to say about all we have coming up in the next few months, but we thought you'd like to hear the news.
We look forward to seeing you March 1st!

Over 3000 people all over the globe have added us to their presets on Live365 and we're number one in our genre category! I've figured out a method of updating the station that is nearly 500% faster, so I'll be doing it ALOT more often. So enough reading...tune in already!

As the opening of the haunting season has begun, sinFUSION is hooking up with the fabulous DJs of Dark Sparkle to bring you a night of spooky, gothy fun!

If you've seen the extent to which Ray decorates for Christmas then you'll have some idea of how witchy and haunted the Rawhide will look come this Saturday. To encourage the spooks and goblins to show up in force, we're lowering the door price to a mere $3 before 10 p.m. and $7 after *and* the first 10 people in costume get in FREE. Whatta deal!

We'll have pumpkin carving up on the roof patio and lots of dark, spooky old-school (and new) music downstairs to rattle yer bones. Ray will be pouring his usual death-defying concoctions. It's a night not to be missed!

I think I'm gonna force one of them DJs to drag out The Ubiquitous Mr. Lovegrove, just for old gothy times sake...

Dark Sparkle's Last Hurrah At The Cafe Du Nord

True to our name, this update has news both Dark and Sparkly.

First the Dark...

This Thursday marks the end of an era as Dark Sparkle and the Cafe Du Nord part ways.
For the last 6 years the Cafe Du Nord has been our home, with other venues graciously opening their doors during scheduling conflicts, etc.
This time however there is no going back. While the Du Nord has left the door open for the odd special event here and there, we're afraid we can no longer call it home.

Like us, we're sure you have a lot of fond memories of the Cafe Du Nord and Dark Sparkle's time there and in honor of that we bring on the Sparkly news...

This Thursday we celebrate Dark Sparkle's 6 year anniversary!
Far from a wake for our dear departed Cafe Du Nord, we plan on not only celebrating our past, but looking forward to our future!
Yes, we already have our first date of year 7 lined up, so don't worry. We're still around.
Now you could wait to see the details posted on darksparkle.com after Thursday, but why not come out and get a fancy new flyer in hand and be the first to know? Come on...you know you wanna.
To sweeten the deal we have brand spanking new CD's to give away! The next in the series of limited edition Dark Sparkle CD's is printed and ready to go.

Well everyone, it looks like this Sunday is the next to last event that we'll be doing at the Cafe Du Nord. After 6 years we've been advised that they can no longer afford to host us unless we can pay more money. Rather than raise our prices (not an option) we've decided to opt out. That leaves Sunday May 29th as our next to last scheduled event. We've been bumped from our anniversary date of June 15th, but managed to get the Du Nord to agree to one last night on Thursday June 30th to serve as our belated anniversary party (so you know that snazzy flyer you have in hand for the 15th? Ignore it.). Hey, we've had a good run. Six years in this city is a measurement that exceeds dog years by far! Maybe it's time to pack it in, but we'd rather not. Anybody know of a club that might be able to host us? We're not quite ready to be done yet, so if any of you can help us out or point us in a good direction...let us know!
Anyway, hope to see you on Sunday!

It's the 3rd in our series of "Dark Sparkle Related Project" CD's. You know, I'm not sure anyone ever got the reference or direct ripoff of the "Swans Related Project" CD art style and design on the last 2, but this one's totally different anyway. A post Valentine's Day look at love found, love lost, disease, murder...the usual.
Miz Margo and I have CD's all to ourselves and work out our demons in our own personal way across 160 minutes of music.
Hope to see you all out at Dark Sparkle on the 16th! We'll have a 100 or so double CD's to give away featuring not only the music, but art by Tiffany Star complementing the whole package.

Question Regarding Musical Acts.

What is DS's Policy of having live musical acts? Do you have musical acts? I bring this up because we are having early talks about touring in '05 and we are looking at our options. And if DS is receptive to such an event, I'd like to propose such actions to my Bandmates. Or you can tell me to piss off now (No hurt, no foul)
