Well everyone, it looks like this Sunday is the next to last event that we'll be doing at the Cafe Du Nord. After 6 years we've been advised that they can no longer afford to host us unless we can pay more money. Rather than raise our prices (not an option) we've decided to opt out. That leaves Sunday May 29th as our next to last scheduled event. We've been bumped from our anniversary date of June 15th, but managed to get the Du Nord to agree to one last night on Thursday June 30th to serve as our belated anniversary party (so you know that snazzy flyer you have in hand for the 15th? Ignore it.). Hey, we've had a good run. Six years in this city is a measurement that exceeds dog years by far! Maybe it's time to pack it in, but we'd rather not. Anybody know of a club that might be able to host us? We're not quite ready to be done yet, so if any of you can help us out or point us in a good direction...let us know!
Anyway, hope to see you on Sunday!

Re: Dark Sparkle has left the building.
Fri, May 27, 2005 - 8:00 PMThat's really too bad. Six years or not.
I know the owners/managers at 330 Ritch Street I could talk to, if you'd be interested... or if anyone would be interested in following Dark Sparkle there.

Wed, June 1, 2005 - 10:03 PMYou should try Cell Space.
I hear the "club for the night package" including security and a lot of EQ, is $1500. The Cell Space has a lot of its own traffic, so the crowd would probably be larger and "impure". -

Fri, June 3, 2005 - 8:46 AM$1500? ouch. That's 300 paying customers @ $5 a piece just to break even.

Re: Dark Sparkle has left the building.
Sun, June 5, 2005 - 2:49 PMDepends upon the set up. Diff. venue owners have diff ways of you paying "rent".
When I ran ADY the set up was always no rent, bar kept bar, I kept door. Of course this was alameda and not San Francisco.
Most SF venues do some sort of bar guarantee. The cheapest one I've heard of is $500. I'm not quite sure how that works, since I've never dealt with them. I know you must make at least the guarantee or you have to pay the difference. I don't know what happens after the guarantee is made, does the bar keep the profit or is the diff. given to the host? Someplaces they do guarantee and rental.
IE I just check with Slim's, this is the weekday evening prices for rental: Evenings, Sunday through Wednesday: The fee to rent our room on a weekday evening is $3500. In addition, we require a $2500 bar guarantee plus 8 1/2% sales tax and 18% gratuity (if hosted bar).
Anywho.. 300 paying people is a lot. I've only seen that many people at a club on a three day weekend or some holiday or anniversary nite, never a regular night. maybe 150, but not 300. (ADY's best nite was The Razor Skyline/Dreams of the Fall show, it only brought in 175 and not all of them were paying)

Re: Dark Sparkle has left the building.
Sun, June 5, 2005 - 4:09 PMI wanted to mention the Underground in the lower haight. They have a bunch of different types of nights, and even, I think, an industrial/goth night already once a month or something, but when I was there they seemed to be in the process of building up a clientel - they did a hardcore/metal night and and I was the only one there until I left at 11:30 or so - but that might be something to look at. Not the biggest space, mind you...but I thought I'd mention it. -

Re: Dark Sparkle has left the building.
Sun, June 5, 2005 - 8:21 PMThis post will not be popular, but, hey, wtf. I'd pay more to get into DS. Maybe take a poll to see who'd be willing to pay more? $5 is dirt cheap. Would a couple of extra bucks a person make a difference? I seriously think dark sparkle is the only spooky joint worth visiting on a regular basis, so I'd pay more.

Re: Dark Sparkle has left the building.
Mon, June 6, 2005 - 10:32 AMThe industrial/goth night you're thinking of is STRANGELOVE. We're every 4th Thursday. The vibe is dark electro, industrial, new wave, and goth, with an emphasis on continous beats. So far guests have been Fernando, Mitch, and Joe Radio.

I think they're phasing the metal night out, as it wasn't doing much business. But the owner is in a metal band, so he'll probably insist on having a metal night at least once a month.
It's true that UndergroundSF is not a huge space, but it's something to consider. -

Re: Dark Sparkle has left the building.
Wed, June 8, 2005 - 7:54 AMThanks for the input everyone. I've been offline for a few days so I haven't had the chance to answer back.
As for the DuNord...
The staff there loves us and many have voiced displeasure at the current situation with management. We may still return someday, but it is unlikely due to the live music focus that the venue now has. We were the last of their legacy DJ nights previous to the management change a couple of years ago.
While initially we were against any kind of price hike, we thought of a couple of workarounds including having the cover go up to $7 with a free before 10:30 or 11:00 caveat. The point is, we wanted people with little to no cash to still be able to come in and have a good time.
There are a couple of venues that we're looking into right now.
I hesitate on saying any more than that until the deal is set. Suffice it to say, we may have a permanent new home in the next couple of months. We should also have a Dark Sparkle coming in July (details soon).
The main thing we're looking for now is a space that's intimate without being small. We've gotten a lot of feedback from everyone regarding spaces and we're listening. The DNA has generously offered their services to us again, but for now we're currently checking out other spaces that might lend themselves better to the intimate surroundings provided by the DuNord.
While we realize that nothing will be able to replace the haunted speakeasy we've called home for the last 6 years, hopefully we'll continue to see you all wherever we go. We're nothing without all the friends who come out to see us and we have no intention of giving up without a fight!
Thanks again,
